Microsoft’s decision to lay off about 9,000 employees is creating ripple effects within its subsidiaries. According to Aftermath, around 100 developers at Blizzard are being affected, prompting the studio to scale back its efforts on the mobile tower defense game Warcraft Rumble.

Blizzard announced that although the game won’t be completely abandoned, they will stop working on new content. “In the future, we’ll keep supporting Rumble through updates that focus on regular in-game events and bug fixes, but no new content will be developed,” the company stated.

Blizzard also mentioned that Rumble, “struggled to align with our expectations for its long-term success.” Despite efforts from the developers to incorporate player feedback, “it ultimately wasn’t enough to guide the game towards sustainability.”

Warcraft Rumble was the first mobile focused game in the Warcraft Universe. It launched in 2023 after nine years in development and was originally one of two mobile games Blizzard was working on, the other being Blizzard’s take on Pokémon Go. That game was never officially announced by Blizzard and cancelled sometime in 2022. Warcraft Rumble joins a handful of other Blizzard games in development stasis along with Starcraft II and Heroes of the Storm.
