STATESBORO, Ga. () — The Statesboro VFW honored Independence Day Friday by paying respect to the history behind the nation.

“Understand the significance of your celebration,” expressed Larry Shatteen, commander of Post #10825 Statesboro. “Gather everyone to honor the United States of America, acknowledging that we’re the greatest nation on Earth.”

They recited the Declaration of Independence, stopping to explain what it truly meant for our first citizens.

“The people of this country faced trials without jury, governance without consent, confiscation without compensation, and oppressive taxation without representation,” Shatteen addressed the audience. “By risking their families, homes, and very lives, they stood up against tyranny.”

Veterans shared stories of fighting for democracy and freedoms overseas and how that adds to the pride they have in their country.

“This is a chance for local veteran organizations along with individuals who value living in this wonderful place to unite and celebrate before our cookout,” said Justin Williams, senior vice commander for the VFW.

Shatteen tells News 3 he hopes to encourage more people to remember and understand the values our country was founded on.

“Study your history and know what America’s all about and why we’re celebrating and join in with us,” said Shatteen. “There’s a lot to learn.”

This was the Statesboro VFW’s 6th year holding the ceremony. Leaders say they have big plans for the 250th anniversary of our country’s founding happening next year.
