SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Boating is a popular way to observe Independence Day fireworks and to cool off.

Following the tragic boating incident in the Skull Creek vicinity, it’s crucial to emphasize the importance of exercising proper safety measures while boating.

Here are a few things you should remember to stay safe:

There’s an uptick in boating accidents during the summer, regardless of whether one is a seasoned mariner or a novice. This is why the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) advises boaters against becoming overly confident while navigating the waters.

Boat accidents bear similarities to car crashes; common incidents involve collisions with other vessels and striking obstacles on the ‘road.’ Like driving, these incidents can be mitigated by adhering to a set of safety precautions:

  • Make sure your boat is in good shape. The SCDNR is conducting courtesy boat inspections to ensure boat safety this weekend.
  • Don’t speed. In certain areas, boats have speed limits. Make sure to respect them like you would when driving a car.
  • Check, check, check. Check your fuel, battery charge, fire extinguisher and lifejacket.
  • Carry a first aid kit. This can be vital in an emergency situation.

Consuming alcohol and boating might sound like the perfect combination, but most boat incidents are caused by inexperience and reckless behavior. Just don’t do it. Here is a list of the most common causes of boating incidents:

  • Weather conditions
  • Lack of maintenance
  • Substance abuse
  • Improper navigation

As you enjoy this holiday weekend, remember to do so safely.
