Danville, Ill. (WCIA) — Trent Sherfield, the wide receiver for the Denver Broncos, organized his fifth annual football camp at Danville High School, where he once graduated, on Saturday. This time around, he introduced something new to the camp.

For the first time, the camp featured a skills camp for girls playing flag football.

“Football isn’t just for boys or men,” expressed Sherfield. “Girls and women should have the same chances that my peers and I were lucky enough to experience.”

Participants engaged in exercises that included footwork, catching, and tackling skills. Sherfield mentioned his intentions to keep hosting the camp for girls and plans to incorporate more football strategy sessions in the years to come.

Sherfield said he was impressed by the girls who showed up.

“I really appreciated all the girls’ effort,” Sherfield said. “They were focused, detailed and intentional.”

The Broncos receiver said he wanted to add the event to his camp last year and that he’s thrilled it worked out this year.

“It’s really cool to see how the game has evolved with flag, with the Olympics coming in 2028,” Sherfield said. “I think it’s great, that it would be an opportunity for girls to get involved with football.”

Girls at the camp agree with the NFL player.

“I’m really proud of the progress the sport has been making and this could really be a future for girls who don’t know what to do yet,” Serenity Martin, a camp attendee, said.

Martin also had a message for girls watching at home.

“Join flag football, we need people,” Martin said.
