ESTES PARK, Colo. (KDVR) An elk in Estes Park decided to spend the Fourth of July holiday doing a bit of shopping, walking into a store downtown while dozens of people looked on.

While the sight thrilled many, experts say it’s a good example to remind people to enjoy the animals from a distance. Corwin Laird was working at the cash register inside Rocky Mountain Connection on Friday when the elk walked in.

“It happens in town, haven’t seen it in our store,” said Laird.

It could’ve been looking for shirts, maybe even something with another elk printed on it. No matter what was on its shopping list, people in the store were thrilled.

“A lot of folks just immediately pulling out their phones, taking pictures, taking videos,” said Laird.

He said the elk eventually left the store when police showed up to escort it away. His biggest concern was seeing people get too close to the animal.

“They weigh six, 700 pounds easily and they kick real hard,” said Laird.

In a span of eight days from May into June of 2024, three elk attacks happened in Estes Park. Rocky Mountain National Park Public Affairs Officer Kyle Patterson advises people to take pictures from a distance.

“Don’t ask how close you can get to wildlife; really, ask how far you should stay back,” said Patterson.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife agrees, saying this time of year, especially as mothers can be protective of calves.

“A really good rule of thumb, if you’re close enough for them to change their behavior in any way, you’re too close,” said Laird.

While the elk left the store without making a purchase, Laird says it at least brought a little excitement.

“You know, livens up the day,” he said.
