Bill Thompson serves as the chief prosecuting attorney at the Latah County Prosecutor’s Office. He assumed the position of Latah County Prosecutor in 1992 following 12 years of private law practice.

Alongside managing both the criminal prosecution and civil legal duties of the Latah County Prosecutor’s Office, Bill has supported other jurisdictions as a Special Prosecutor. He offers regular training and consulting to elected officials, law enforcement, and fellow prosecutors on topics such as ethics, new laws and cases, trial and investigation techniques, interagency collaboration, and risk management.

He was a member of the Idaho Prosecuting Attorneys Association Board of Directors from 1998 to 2003, serving as President in 1999 and again in 2002. Additionally, Bill has been part of the Idaho Juvenile Justice Commission since 2002 and has recently contributed to the Idaho Criminal Justice Commission’s Public Defense Subcommittee.

In 2011, Bill was awarded the Idaho Association of Counties’ H. Sydney Duncombe Award for Excellence in County Government. In 2014, Bill was elected to the Idaho Association of Counties Executive Committee and has served as Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President and President of that Association. Bill has also been honored with a 2017 Idaho State Bar Professionalism Award.

Having grown up in a military family, Bill was always on the moved, until he moved to Moscow in 1977 to attend Law School. He graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law in 1980.
