Texas flood relief: How to help

(NEXSTAR) – With the death toll escalating from the devastating floods in Central Texas over the holiday weekend, people in America are seeking ways to assist those who are still grappling with recovery and trying to understand the magnitude of the disaster.

The violent flash floods — some of the most severe the nation has seen in decades — hit camps and residences along the Guadalupe River before dawn on Friday. They swept sleeping individuals from their cabins, tents, and trailers, carrying them miles downstream among floating debris, including tree trunks and cars. Survivors have been found clinging to trees.

By Monday, the number of confirmed deaths had risen to at least 104 as a major search operation continued for those still missing. In Kerr County, which was severely impacted, officials report finding the bodies of 84 individuals, 28 of whom are children. With the forecast predicting more rain as of Monday, further flooding poses a threat to parts of the region.

The scale of the loss has understandably stirred emotions and a drive to help. Those looking to show support for flood victims can make donations to either the San Antonio Area Foundation – Kerrville Flood Relief Fund and the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country – Kerrville Flood Relief Fund, both endorsed by the United Way of Central Texas.

“These families are facing unimaginable losses, and we know how strong the Central Texas community is when it comes to rising together in moments of crisis,” Veshell Greene, president & CEO of United Way of Central Texas said in a press release. “This is not just about financial help — it’s about showing up for our neighbors with empathy, love, and action.”

The United Way of Central Texas says every dollar donated to either fund will directly support emergency housing, food, clothing, and other recovery efforts.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
