Strong winds spurred by sweeping cold fronts topped 100km/hr in four states yesterday in a freezing winter chill.

It followed strong winds reaching 119km/hr south of Perth on Monday.

According to Weatherzone, Thredbo in NSW experienced winds reaching 119km/hr yesterday morning. In comparison, Mount Buller in Victoria saw winds of 107km/hr, Mount Read in Tasmania had winds at 104km/hr, and Cape Willoughby on Kangaroo Island, South Australia recorded winds of 102km/hr.

Victoria also saw gusts of up to 106km/hr at Mount Hotham and 102km/hr at Mount William in the Grampians.

Winds picked up for NSW and Victoria on Tuesday afternoon, according to Weatherzone, reaching 111km/hr at Mount Hotham and 128km/hr at Thredbo.

Thredbo also endured an hour and a half of winds consistently at 100km/hr up to midday.

Weatherzone said the “feels like” temperature at that time in the area was -23 degrees.

The cold front is expected to bring snowfalls to the alpine regions through to Thursday this week.
