BEAUFORT, S.C. () — At least 10 additional books are now being challenged in the Beaufort County School District (BCSD).

South Carolina tops the nation in a new category, banned books, with 22 different titles removed from schools. Now, several additional titles are being contested in the Lowcountry.

acquired 11 titles that are being challenged:

  • “Shine” by Lauren Myracle
  • “Skin” by Donna Jo Napoli
  • “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison
  • “The Carnival at Bray” by Jessie Ann Foley
  • “The Duff” by Kody Keplinger
  • “Like a Love Story” by Adbi Nazemian
  • “The Freedom Writers Diary” by Erin Gruwell
  • “The Infinite Moment of Us” by Lauren Myracle
  • “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini
  • “Tilt” by Ellen Hopkins
  • “Water for Elephants” by Sarah Gruen

Every book listed above was challenged by one woman from Beaufort County. She is permitted to do this under Regulation 43-170, which considers any book with a description of “sexual conduct” as inappropriate for all students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The BCSD has already reviewed the first five books listed and have since sent them to the state board to review.

The woman reportedly submitted an additional complaint for “Like a Love Story” after contacting a local high school principal about the book.

The last five books were challenged in April.
