The ABC7 Data Team analyzed the numbers from Chicago police. We found the number of shooting victims in the past 12 months stands at 2,225.

There has been a reduction of almost 28% from the previous three-year average. Fatal shootings have decreased by 25% over the past year, while non-fatal shootings have declined by more than 28%.

We talked with two leaders in the fight to reduce gun violence about the successes and what still needs to be done.

On “Our Chicago,” we talked with two leaders in the fight to reduce gun violence about the successes and what still needs to be done.

Yolanda Androzzo is the executive director of One Aim Illinois.

“We need greater investments in community violence intervention programs,” she stated. “It’s essential to invest in healing the trauma within our communities, particularly Black and Brown communities, that have been impacted by gun violence.”

Teny Gross, CEO of The Institute For NonViolence Chicago, agrees that more funding is needed.

“We are integral to public safety. So, when conversations about police funding arise, we must also consider funding the other essential components,” he explained. “This is crucial. It must continue for us to transform this city. I am certain of that.”
