BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Authorities have reported that a 30-year-old man is facing charges for driving over 100 mph while having a suspended license in Brevard County.

As detailed in a post by Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey on social media, Ryan Samayoa was apprehended on Saturday after he was recorded traveling at 106 mph in a 45 mph zone on the Eau Gallie Causeway.

Sheriff Ivey mentioned that a new law, effective from July 1st—HB 351 Dangerous Excessive Speeding—might result in jail time or fines for individuals driving 50 mph or more above the speed limit. This law also applies to those exceeding 100 mph, posing a threat to the safety of others or interfering with other vehicles.

Under that new law, also known as the “Super Speeder,” a new criminal offense was established under a state statute labeled “dangerous excessive speeding.”

Speeding itself is generally considered a noncriminal traffic infraction, punished primarily with fines, but HB 351 makes it so that excessive speeding is an arrestable offense. This is in addition to any applicable fines for speeding.

“There’s absolutely no excuse for driving at these speeds, as we all know it doesn’t end well for anyone. I hope this new law makes people think twice before driving at these ridiculous speeds!!,” Ivey said.

Under the law, someone who commits “dangerous excessive speeding” can be punished by up to 30 days in jail and a fine of $500 for a first offense.

A second offense could result in up to 90 days in jail and a fine of $1,000.

Additionally, a repeat offense within five years, could result in revocation of that person’s driver’s license for up to a year.

Samayoa was booked into Brevard County jail on $500 bond and faces charges of driving in excess of the speed limit by 50 mph or more, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.
