Police are searching parklands for a weapon after a man was found with a gunshot wound after crashing his car into a tree in Melbourne’s north.

9News reports that a Toyota 86 was being followed by another vehicle on a street in Roxburgh Park when shots were allegedly fired into the Toyota around 7pm last night.

The car then veered through a park oval fence then smashed into a tree near the corner of Donald Cameron Drive and Bridgewater Road.

The driver, a 30-year-old man from Reservoir, was transported to the hospital with critical injuries, which included a gunshot wound to his leg and injuries sustained from the collision.

A 26-year-old female passenger from Kalkallo was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries sustained during the crash.

Police are now searching for the weapon in nearby parklands with the help of the dog squad.

The gunman remains on the run.

Police believe the shooting was a targeted incident, but the investigation into the circumstances are ongoing.
