Mail carrier accused of stealing Menards rebates enters guilty plea

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) A South Dakota mail carrier has admitted to taking receipts and rebate slips bound for Menards, a Midwest-based home improvement store, to cash in for himself.

Court documents say Nicholas Travers, of Pierre, kept an eye out for mail being sent to the company’s rebate center in Elk Mound, Wisconsin.

Menards often offers mail-in rebates on items purchased in its stores. Customers are required to mail a form with their rebate receipt to a P.O. box in Wisconsin. The retailer then sends the customer a credit check, “folded with the dollar amount concealed.”

While the total on the checks may be hidden, the address for the Menards rebate center can be easily identified.

Investigators said Travers would take envelopes bound for Elk Mound, fill out new rebate forms, and send them in with the stolen receipts so that he would receive the rebates.

Court documents filed last fall said Travers did this for more than two years.

Travers entered a guilty plea to a federal charge of theft of mail matter by officer or employee on Monday. A sentencing date has not been scheduled.
