BULLOCH COUNTY, Ga. () — Officials in Bulloch County have arranged for three well-drilling companies to be on alert in the event that the community’s drinking water supply is impacted by two Hyundai wells.

“These firms can quickly address and investigate any problems,” explained James Pope, the county’s planning and development director.

The county has engaged these well drilling services to handle any issues that may arise due to the anticipated large-scale water extraction from the Hyundai wells, which are expected to draw millions of gallons daily once operational.

“They’re not going to be using four-million gallons immediately so there’s a ramp up period,” said Pope.

Pope told News 3 the new contracts are a major milestone for their groundwater sustainability program which will work with residents living within the five-mile impact zone of the Hyundai wells, in the case that they have any changes to the water level in their well.

“All three are full-service outfitted so that they can replace any electrical components with it up to if the need were to arise, they could drill a new well,” said Pope.

Pope said only deep wells that are connected to the Floridan Aquifer hundreds of feet below ground would be affected. He said if your home is older, it’s likely a shallow well that’s fed by a different water source than Hyundai.

“We’ll be ready to respond in any way we have to but again with the ramp up period in water usage, we’re prepared for the worst but we’re really not expecting much impact based on the test,” said Pope.

He said the drillers would work through the county, so that there’s no upfront costs to residents. He said they would start as soon as construction finishes and they start pumping.
