A 65-year-old Melbourne man faces life in prison after allegedly trying to import 92kg of drugs and 477,000 cigarettes disguised as clothes.

Border force officers in Sydney and Melbourne say they uncovered the illegal shipments spread across four separate consignments in February.

The first three shipments in Sydney came from Vietnam and were labelled as containing leggings, hats and socks, they said.
