MATTOON, Ill. (WCIA) — Even with the second “do not drink” order lifted, some are still feeling the negative effects in Mattoon.

Due to two “do not drink” advisories, some businesses in the city had to shut down for a week, while others remained open by adjusting their operations to ensure safety. In response, organizations across Central Illinois are stepping up to help.

The Mattoon Chamber of Commerce is supporting local businesses by providing $1,500 each. According to the chamber, the Southeastern Illinois Community Foundation based in Effingham donated funds to offset losses. This initiative resulted in 18 businesses, including Hunan Chinese restaurant and Luigi’s Italian, receiving checks.

However, it didn’t stop there. The Original Burger King decided they wanted to help out their fellow food spots as well.

“They donated $5,000 to locally owned downtown restaurants,” stated Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Ed Dowd. “There are seven such restaurants downtown, so the Mattoon Chamber Charitable Corporation added $2,000, allowing us to give $1,000 to each of these establishments as well.”

Another nonprofit is getting involved as well. The Community Foundation of East Central Illinois is matching donations for Mattoon up to $7,500.

The foundation’s CEO said $15,000 will go to nonprofits in the Mattoon area who can distribute it where they see need. The latest tests showed toxin levels are below the safety limit, meaning people can resume using the tap water.
