OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Overland Park rescue crews have confirmed that a woman was killed Monday morning after flash floods hit parts of the Kansas City metro.

According to Overland Park police, just after 9:30 a.m., crews were dispatched to Creekside Park, near 155th Street and Nall Avenue, regarding a missing person, later identified as a woman in her mid-60s.

Overland Park police said a family member told them the woman frequently walks along the trail, which runs alongside a creek.

Police reported that she had been out walking since about 7:30 a.m. and hadn’t returned by the time the heavy rain and flash floods passed over the metro.

When officers arrived on the scene, they said the woman was found in the creek. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the heavy rain caused the creek to overflow above the banks, forcing the woman to lose her footing and drown in the floodwaters.

According to Overland Park police, units with the Leawood and Overland Park Fire Departments helped with the recovery efforts.

As of Monday afternoon, police have not released the name of the victim as immediate family is still working to contact extended family members. However, affiliate FOX4KC was told that the woman was a resident from a nearby neighborhood.

Police said the incident is still under investigation.
