URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The University YMCA at the University of Illinois is preparing for its yearly Dump and Run event, aimed at diverting several tons of materials from landfills within the Champaign-Urbana area each year.

During this event, the University YMCA will gather usable items from the community at the U of I Stock Pavilion, 1402 W. Pennsylvania Avenue, Urbana. The collection begins Monday, Aug. 4, and continues daily, excluding Sundays, until Aug. 16. Donation times differ, and the schedule is as follows:

  • Mon., Aug. 4: 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Tues., Aug. 5 to Fri., Aug. 8: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Mon., Aug. 11 to Fri., Aug. 15: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Late pickup day: Wed., Aug. 13 until 7 p.m.
  • Weekend hours: Saturdays Aug. 9 & 16: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Items such as furniture, dishes, small household appliances, operational electronics, bicycles, and other household goods will be accepted. However, donations like paint, car seats, large appliances, mattresses, and dirty furniture will not be accepted. Click here for a complete list of accepted items.

“Dump & Run is a great sustainability program for the community, and we’re excited as ever for another huge year,” Marc Alexander, University YMCA director of development and membership said. “We hope people will take this opportunity to clear out some of their old things, and find them a new home. Donations keep usable goods out of our landfills, and help students and community members find quality items for low cost.”

On Saturday Aug. 9 and Aug. 16, The University Y also offers free pick-up days for furniture and bicycle donations. Click here to request a pickup.

The Dump and Run sale will be held August 23 and 24. On Saturday, the sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and admission costs $5. The next day a $3 bag sale will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Furniture will be half price. Then from 2:30 to 3 p.m., organizers said items will be free. Furniture delivery is available for a $10 fee, but is curbside only.

Ahead of the sale, Dump and Run organizers are looking for volunteers to help with collections and the sale at the U of I Stock Pavilion. Volunteers are needed from Aug. 4 to Aug. 25 to help with sorting, collecting, pricing, and more. Sign up to volunteer here.
