HARLEM, Ga. () – AAA is reminding drivers to stay alert and exercise extra caution as children prepare to return to the classroom.

On Wednesday, AAA teamed up with the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to kick-start the “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” initiative. Representatives and law enforcement gathered at North Harlem Elementary School on July 23 to raise awareness about the campaign.

“The bus is large, making it visible. Its yellow color stands out, especially when the lights are on. If any equipment activates those lights, you have ample opportunity to slow down. Slowing down is crucial. If you’re uncertain, the safest choice is to come to a stop,” explained Captain Maurice Raines from Georgia’s Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. “It’s straightforward, and these two simple actions can potentially save lives.”

Drivers who are convicted of illegally passing a school bus in Georgia face up to an $1,000 fine, 12 months in jail, or both.
