WESTVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — Family has had a big influence on Abby Sabalasky’s life — including her grandpa John.

“He’s kind of what got me into pitching in the first place,” Abby said.

He played as a pitcher for the Illini in the early 1950s, and Abby is poised to uphold that tradition by committing to Illinois with four years of eligibility remaining.

“I definitely want to win, but for me, what matters most right now is finding a second home, like a family I can rely on because I will certainly need the support,” Abby stated.

Joining the Illini is a full circle moment for Sabalaskey, who pitched to Illini head coach Tyra Perry when she was 12.

“They acknowledged the talent I possess and noticed the successes I’ve had in the past, yet they also mentioned that I’m not a finished product. They’re really eager to work with me and further develop my skills,” Abby remarked.

The 2024 Westville grad set five school records with a career ERA of 0.64, ready to bring vocal leadership to Champaign.

“I used to be really, really quiet, but I just kind of learned to step out of my comfort zone, and not only learn how to not only set an example from a physical standpoint, but just be more encouraging,” Abby said.

“She’s very confident on the mound, I find, and I think that she always stays grounded, Abby’s sister, Peyton, said. “She never lets anything in the game or any situation get to her head.”

The three-time all-state pitcher returned to her home state after a brief time at Northern Kentucky, now representing her hometown on the Big Ten stage.

“I think it’s just awesome; it’s just like we have this small-town girl going to the Big Ten,” Abby said. I mean, like, how cool is that?”
