A lighting system at a pickleball complex in Champaign has been awarded a prestigious certification for its efforts in sustainability.

DarkSky International announced on Wednesday that the Centennial Park Pickleball Complex in Champaign has achieved the DarkSky Approved Outdoor Sports Lighting certification. Managed by the Champaign Park District, the complex underwent a sustainable lighting upgrade in February 2025, becoming the second outdoor sports venue in Illinois to earn this recognition.

The new lighting system, crafted by Musco Lighting, adheres to DarkSky’s stringent criteria to reduce light pollution and safeguard the environment. The pickleball complex, situated at 2203 W John St. and commonly known as John Street Courts, is a hub for daily pick-up games, the annual Champaign Park District Pickleball Open every May, and summer pickleball leagues.

The need for this lighting grew as the want to play pickleball after sunset increased in Champaign County. This lighting system aims to keep the illumination within the court, protecting surrounding areas from unnatural lighting and glare.

“The courts are often at full capacity with four players per court and others waiting their turn,” said Sarah Sandquist, Executive Director of the Champaign Park District. “Within an hour of the new lights being installed, players shared the news on social media and were playing until after 8:00 p.m. We’re thrilled to provide this amenity in a way that aligns with our sustainability goals.”

Additionally, this lighting project is the first phase of a multi-year plan to enhance and grow the complex. Future updates plan to include eight more courts, restrooms and additional parking.
