New Bryan Kohberger Mugshot Released as Officials Weigh Sending Him to One of the Nation’s Toughest Prisons

Idaho killer Bryan Kohberger will spend the rest of his life in prison with no possibility for parole or appeal.

On July 23, District Judge Steven Hippler handed down a sentence of four consecutive life terms to Kohberger for the November 2022 murders of University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves.

He also received a 10-year sentence for burglary, following a plea deal earlier this month, that took the death penalty off the table.

Kohberger is expected to be moved to the Idaho Maximum Security Institution (IMSI) located in Kuna, roughly 10 miles south of Boise, as reported by KIRO 7.

Prior to beginning his sentence, Kohberger will undergo up to “two weeks of evaluations,” as stated by an Idaho Department of Corrections spokesperson to People magazine.

“Once in IDOC custody, the person goes through a reception and diagnostic process (RDU) to evaluate their needs and determine appropriate housing placement,” the spokesperson said.

“We wait until a person completes RDU to determine their classification or housing placement.”

The Idaho Statesmen reports that IMSI is known for its harsh conditions, with a reputation for holding inmates in solitary confinement for nearly 24 hours a day.

Reports have also indicated that inmates have limited medical care, unclean water, unsanitary conditions, and a high turnover rate, leading to ongoing under-staffing. The prison also houses death row inmates and is equipped with armed guard towers, razor wiring and double perimeter fencing.

The Independent reports that in 2024, the Security Journal Americas listed IMSI as one of the nation’s worst prisons, with clogged vents, feces-covered walls, biohazard-level HVAC problems, and moldy showers.

Given the infamy of the case, there is a possibility that Kohberger could be sent to an out-of-state facility, the IDC spokesperson told People.

“Out-of-state placements are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and consider safety and security of our staff, the facility, and other prison management reasons as deemed necessary.”

However, Chad Daybell, sentenced for killing first wife and his second wife Lori Vallow’s two children, is serving his time at IMSI.
