Trump backs Sarasota area state Sen. Joe Gruters as next RNC chair

On Thursday, President Trump expressed his backing for Florida state Senator Joe Gruters (R) to take on the role of the next Republican National Committee (RNC) head. This comes as the current chairman, Michael Whatley, is reportedly gearing up to launch a Senate campaign in the upcoming days.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump endorsed Whatley for a Senate run in North Carolina. This move would have him succeed Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), who will not be contesting for another term. Sources informed The Hill earlier Thursday of Whatley’s anticipated candidacy, which has Trump’s approval.

“Mike would excel as a Senator for North Carolina,” Trump remarked about Whatley, who formerly chaired the North Carolina GOP. “His track record is impressive, and his performance at the RNC was outstanding. During the Presidential Election, we secured victories in every Swing State, won the Popular Vote, and triumphed in the Electoral College by a significant margin!”

“Fortunately, I have somebody who will do a wonderful job as the Chairman of the RNC,” Trump added. “His name is, Joe Gruters, and he will have my Complete and Total Endorsement. So, should Michael Whatley run for the Senate, please let this notification represent my Complete and Total Endorsement.”

Gruters is a Trump ally who has served in the Florida Senate since 2018 and as RNC treasurer since earlier this year. Gruters has clashed with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who was a bitter rival of Trump during the 2024 presidential primary.

Gruters would need to be elected by RNC members to lead the organization, but would likely face no competition with Trump’s backing.
