CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A project providing housing to homeless people with ongoing medical conditions in Champaign-Urbana is breaking ground.

Carle Health is developing Hope Village at the intersection of Kenyon Road and Federal Drive. This area will feature 30 one-bedroom homes, a community center, and various other facilities.

The community center’s frame is already up, and construction on the home’s foundations is beginning.

Carle will also be partnering with Champaign Health Care Consumers who will be helping with individual case management.

“It’s a dream come true,” remarked Claudia Lennhoff, Executive Director of Champaign Health Care Consumers. “This is the type of housing that is required across our nation and especially within our community.”

Project Lead Marty Smith said the project is an example of what could happen in other communities.

“It’s unique, again, in the fact that it’s provided it’s combining housing, healthcare and supportive services in one project,” Smith added.

Smith also said they’re aiming to finish construction in February of next year, and they will start moving people in shortly after that.
