The event occurred on Tuesday around 3:25 p.m., near the area of Fox River Road and North Harvest Glen Road in unincorporated Cary, as reported by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Two girls were walking home when they said a car pulled up in front of them and the driver exited the car wearing a mask, the sheriff said.

The girls quickly ran home and one of the girls told her father and older brother what was happening.

The father and brother drove around to look for the suspect and get a license plate number, the sheriff said.

The suspect, a 32-year-old man of Cary, used his car to block the path of the father and brother and allegedly pulled out a gun, the sheriff said.

After calling 911, a McHenry County Sheriff’s deputy responded to the area and found the vehicle.

Deputies tried to pull the vehicle over; however, the suspect pulled into a parking lot in the area of Crystal Lake Road and Foxford Drive.

The suspect then shot himself, according to the sheriff’s office. He was rushed to an area hospital where he died.

“This situation is undeniably tragic for everyone involved. The teenagers acted correctly by not engaging with the individual, fleeing, and seeking help from trusted adults,” stated Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office. “We are immensely grateful that they are safe.”

McHenry County officials are investigating the death, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the attempted kidnapping.
