Augusta commissioner says current trash fee proposal not acceptable

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Augusta leaders say right now for trash, it’s too much cash.   

“We have commissioners, and I’ve been actively working on this issue. We will not remain idle and let the situation persist. We’re determined to find ways to deliver the service at a more affordable rate,” stated Mayor Pro-Tem Wayne Guilfoyle.

The city administrator is recommending increasing the garbage fee from $320 dollars to $395 starting next year, a $75 dollar increase.

The administrator mentioned that the funds are essential to offset the expenses of garbage collection and to support services such as blight demolition, vacant lot maintenance, and mosquito management, while acknowledging it might not be well-received.

“Our task is to present something that, despite being undesirable to them, includes a commitment to accountability in fulfilling their promised needs,” explained City Administrator Tameka Allen.

And as trash fees look to increase, those who want to recycle would take a bigger hit, with new monthly fees based on the level of service.

To get once a week will cost an extra $178 a year, on top of the proposed new trash fee.

“Recycling holds great importance to me at the moment. I take my recyclables to Warren Road, as I wish to continue this practice. It benefits both the community and the planet, but it does carry a hefty price tag,” expressed Jason Scherer.

Under the current proposal, if you want to recycle like before, it means paying more than $570 dollars a year in trash service.

“As it stands right now is this acceptable?”

“No, it’s not,” said Guilfoyle.

City leaders are scheduled to make a final decision at their meeting August 12th.
