Bamboozled: Viral bunny trampoline video is fake

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Over the weekend, a video went viral on social media, garnering millions of views and shares over multiple platforms.

The situation began on Sunday when TikTok user @rachelthecatlovers shared a video with the caption, “Just checked the home security cam and… I think we’ve got guest performers out back! @Ring.”

The video has been shared over multiple platforms and garnered millions of views. However, it turns out the whole thing is fake.

The account @rachelthecatlovers has only five videos, four of which were uploaded within the last three days, and all either use AI or include AI elements. In the bunny trampoline video, one of the three bunnies on the right side of the trampoline vanishes. There are additional clear indicators of AI, like abrupt shifts in color and resolution and an unnatural blur.

The video was viewed over 57 million times in one day and reposted on various social media sites, according to fact-check website Lead Stories.

“In truth, that wasn’t real home security footage, and those weren’t actual bunnies,” the site concludes, pointing out that besides the disappearing bunny, another one appears to morph. “The entire clip was AI-generated.”

The video inspired copycats, featuring dogs, deer, bears, and raccoons jumping on trampolines. Although the videos might appear harmless, they serve as a valuable reminder that not everything posted and circulated online should be trusted implicitly.

The Better Business Bureau offers tips on how to spot fake content generated by AI.
