KYIV – Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched missiles and drones at the capital overnight, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals, including a 6-year-old boy, as detailed on Thursday.

Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, confirmed that the attacks left at least 52 other people wounded, with the toll expected to increase.

Tkachenko reported that a significant portion of a nine-story apartment block had collapsed after being hit. Rescue operations were ongoing to assist those trapped beneath the debris.

On his official Telegram channel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted, “Missile strike. Direct hit on a residential building. People are under the rubble. Emergency services are at the scene.”

Photos from the site depicted smoke rising from the damaged building and debris scattered on the ground. The blast’s impact even left clothes hanging from trees.

Ignoring police warnings, residents returned to the attack zone to collect their belongings. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko were present at the scene.

At least 27 locations across Kyiv were hit by the attack, Tkachenko said, with the heaviest damage seen in the Solomianskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he’s giving Russian President Vladimir Putin a shorter deadline — Aug. 8 — for peace efforts to make progress or Washington will impose punitive sanctions and tariffs.

Western leaders have accused Putin of dragging his feet in U.S.-led peace efforts in an attempt to capture more Ukrainian land.
