Hello, and welcome to Decoder! I’m Alex Heath, your host for this Thursday episode and deputy editor at The Verge. I am joined today by Hayden Field, The Verge’s senior AI reporter. We’re diving into the AI talent wars and exploring why some researchers are suddenly being traded like NBA superstars.

If you’ve been following the AI industry recently, you’ve likely noticed the hiring frenzy at Big Tech, research labs, and AI startups. Leading the charge is Mark Zuckerberg, who has been making unprecedented job offers to try and attract top talent to Meta.

But there’s more to this narrative. Hayden and I have been studying this situation over the past few weeks to understand the scale of these offers, why firms like Google prefer hiring over acquiring, and the fact that some of the most coveted AI experts are now driven by more than just money.
