Newcastle told Yoanne Wissa is pointless transfer and not good enough to get in their team

Newcastle fans have been trying to get their hopes up about Yoanne Wissa, only for one of their former managers to crush them.

The Magpies are heavily linked with the 19-goal season Brentford striker, and the player is just as keen to get a deal done.

Nonetheless, this deal is overshadowed by the possibility of Newcastle’s key player, Alexander Isak, leaving, as he has declined to participate in their pre-season tour due to interest from Liverpool.

Yet whether he stays or goes is irrelevant to former manager Alan Pardew, who thinks Wissa isn’t the right player in either scenario.

“I can’t see that one, I don’t see where he fits in,” the talkSPORT host said. “I don’t think he’s a replacement for Isak.

“Then he’s the back-up, would Wissa want to be a back-up? I wouldn’t have thought so.”

Pardew added: “I think they’re probably trying to give their fan base some good news.

“If you’re a Newcastle fan it hasn’t been a great summer looking at the transfer market.

“Although they’ve secured the cup, which should make this season promising, I don’t consider Wissa a positive addition. I just can’t envision him getting a starting spot, and if I were in his shoes, I wouldn’t take that move.”

The latest on Yoanne Wissa’s future

According to talkSPORT correspondent Ben Jacobs, Newcastle is currently the only team that has made a definite offer for Wissa, though there is also interest coming from Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the situation might become complicated as Jacobs suggests a prior agreement allowed him to leave this summer for €30million (£26m), which is now more complex since his strike partner Bryan Mbeumo has already joined Manchester United.

Jacobs stated: “Wissa seems to prefer Newcastle. While Tottenham hasn’t made any moves, if they do, the Thomas Frank connection could come into play, possibly encouraging Brentford to engage in a bidding war.

“Let’s not forget Nottingham Forest had a bid of £20million rejected [in January].

“Newcastle are the ones really pushing and Wissa wants to play Champions League football, he thinks it’s the last chance at his age.

“He also points out that when Ivan Toney left in the summer and then Igor Thiago suffered a knee injury in December, Brentford had assured Wissa, ‘remain the entire season, and you can leave for £26m’ in those months.”

“Wissa now feels that Brentford have reneged on that promise and that’s why it’s relatively tense at the moment between the player and club.”

Yet despite all the signs pointing towards St James’ Park, whether Isak stays or not, Pardew isn’t alone in thinking the deal doesn’t add up.

Former Magpie and current Northampton Town manager Kevin Nolan was in agreement with his old boss.

“I’m not sure he’d get the goals and become the number nine,” he told talkSPORT.

“It’s no disrespect to Brentford but it is different playing at Newcastle and being the number nine than it is at Brentford.

“There’s an expectation there. I don’t really want to have a go at Brentford and have their fans going at me but it is a big difference.”
