PRESIDENT Donald Trump has ordered that two nuclear submarines be positioned near Russia following stern threats from Vladimir Putin’s comrade.
The action by the commander-in-chief follows what Trump described as a “foolish” remark by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who cautioned that the United States is taking significant steps towards conflict with Moscow.
The two superpowers have been caught in a verbal battle after Medvedev, now serving as deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, criticized Trump for “playing the ultimatum game” in the White House’s efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine.
Trump originally set a 50-day deadline for Putin to end the conflict but abruptly reduced it to 10 days from July 29 due to insufficient progress from Moscow.
Medvedev ominously warned Trump that Russia “isn’t Israel or even Iran.”
“Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war,” the former Russian president wrote on an X post.
Trump slammed Medvedev’s words as “foolish and inflammatory” before ordering the placement of nuclear submarines near Russian territory.
“In light of the highly provocative remarks by the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who currently serves as the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have directed two Nuclear Submarines to be stationed in the relevant areas,” Trump announced on Truth Social.
“Just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.
“Words carry significant weight and can sometimes lead to unintended outcomes; I hope this is not one of those cases. Thank you for your attention to this issue!”
The United States possesses the largest fleet of nuclear-powered submarines globally, including its flagship, the USS Virginia, which is 377-feet long and armed with cruise missiles.
