TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The newly-promoted principal of Leto High School in Tampa was arrested this weekend and charged with cocaine possession.

Scott Hazlett, 40, has worked in the Hillsborough County Public School system for almost two decades, starting his career at Alonso High in 2007.

Records from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office indicated that Hazlett was taken into custody by the Temple Terrace Police Department in the early morning of Saturday, August 2.

He has been charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and felony possession of cocaine.

Recently, a post on X by Hillsborough County Schools announced his recent advancement to principal of Leto High, less than a month ago, without specifying the exact date he began in this role.

HCPS released a statement following his arrest:

Having been with the district since 2007, he is now placed on administrative leave due to the recent accusations. These claims are extremely troubling, and we are grateful for the swift action taken by law enforcement. We recognize the potential impact on our students and staff and are dedicated to providing them with necessary support during this challenging period.
