Police hunt e-scooter vandal in Scream mask after synagogue repeatedly vandalised

It is alleged an unknown male spray-painted offensive phrases on the outside walls of Melbourne Hebrew Congregation on Toorak Road in South Yarra five times between March and July this year.

CCTV footage shows the man arriving on a black e-scooter and in two instances in July he was seen wearing a Scream mask, which covered his face.

The alleged graffiti incidents at the heritage-listed synagogue took place on March 11, June 21, June 22, July 22 and July 30, police said.

In some instances, pro-Palestine messaging including “free Palestine” and “Iran is da bomb” were brandished in red and blue spray paint across the wall of the synagogue.

The man appears to be of Caucasian appearance, is bald and of a medium build, police said.

His clothing changed in each incident, however he usually wore a long black jacket and a face covering.

Police released footage of a man they believe can assist in the investigation.

“There is absolutely no place at all in our society for hate-based behaviour,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

Premier Jacinta Allan described the graffiti in June as a “disgraceful, senseless attack”.

“We must never let, here in Melbourne and Victoria, conflict and violence and hatred overseas come to our streets and suburbs,” she said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
