Inside Idaho Killer Bryan Kohberger’s New Home at One of the Nation’s Toughest Prisons

Idaho killer Bryan Kohberger exhibited questionable behavior while behind bars at the Latah County Jail in Moscow, prior to his murder conviction.

Bryan Kohberger’s cellmate revealed to Cpl. Brett Payne from the Moscow Police Department that Kohberger had a habit of spending “45 minutes to an hour in the shower” and would wash his hands “dozens of times” each day.

The report, obtained by People Magazine, also indicated that Kohberger would stay “awake all night” while moving around the jail cell.

The inmate also mentioned that Kohberger showed curiosity about other inmates’ reasons for their arrests but never brought up the University of Idaho murders.

An incident that stands out is when Kohberger became angry after another inmate shouted, “you suck,” during his phone call with his mother. Kohberger, clearly upset, confronted the inmate to ask if the remark was directed at him and his mother.

The report said that the pair talked things out, according to what the report said.

In November 2022, Kohberger was found guilty of murdering University of Idaho students Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves. He has been moved to the J Block of the Idaho Maximum Security Institution, located approximately nine miles south of Boise.

Reports indicate that he will be in a single-person cell, getting one hour a day for outdoor recreation. His movement will be restricted with shackles, and he will have access to a shower every few days.

According to the Idaho Statesmen, IMSI has a reputation for its severe conditions, often keeping inmates in solitary confinement for almost the entire day.

Reports have also indicated that inmates have limited medical care, unclean water, unsanitary conditions, and a high turnover rate, leading to ongoing under-staffing. The prison also houses death row inmates and is equipped with armed guard towers, razor wiring and double perimeter fencing.

The Independent reports that in 2024, the Security Journal Americas listed IMSI as one of the nation’s worst prisons, with clogged vents, feces-covered walls, biohazard-level HVAC problems, and moldy showers.

The prison housed notorious spree killer Paul Ezra Rhoades, who died by lethal injection in 2011, for the deaths of three women. The prison also houses Chad Daybell, who was convicted of killing his two stepchildren and his former wife.
