AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Augusta Housing & Community Development is encouraging residents to apply for their Emergency Rental Assistance Program.
This program helps people who live in Richmond County with their rent, utility and housing-related payments.
They started this intake at May Park on Wednesday afternoon and have seen huge lines.
I spoke with District 1 Commissioner Jordan Johnson who tells me they have seen the need for assistance go up now more than ever.
“The economy is challenging; prices are increasing while wages remain stagnant, which is causing problems for people. The demand for affordable housing is growing in Augusta, and with rising rent costs, people need support. If the city has the means to assist, I believe we should,” Johnson stated.
The Emergency Rental Assistance Program is federally funded for short-term support. The application deadline is September 19.
Johnson mentions that the city is committed to ensuring its community members receive the necessary support. He expresses pride in the city’s ability to provide assistance whenever possible.
“This is a chance for the city to bring resources into the community, helping individuals improve their lives.” He added, “It’s gratifying to know we can support people with their rent. Everyone has needs, and we shouldn’t ignore this reality or be judgmental. It’s beneficial because people require aid, and we’re in a position to provide it.”
There will be more intake opportunities over the course of this month:
