URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — A car crash in Urbana has prompted community members to ask how an intersection can be made safer.
On Thursday morning, Urbana police closed the intersection at Florida and Lincoln Avenue due to a collision involving two vehicles. This incident included a deputy and a driver from Reynolds tow truck.
Both were taken to the hospital.
This particular intersection has been the site of numerous accidents and remains troublesome. WCIA interviewed a local resident who confirmed these kinds of incidents are quite frequent.
“More than 20 years ago, they added traffic lights, which greatly improved things. I remember when my kids were in high school or middle school, and a car actually crashed through our fence due to an accident here. People really need to be cautious and slow down in this area,” shared community member Susan Frobish.
The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy is in serious but stable condition.
Reynolds Towing did not want to comment while the investigation is still going on.
The Champaign County Regional Planning Commission previously assessed this intersection and determined that residents consider it the most problematic spot on campus.
