SANFORD, Fla. – Drivers in Seminole County could soon pay more at the pump.

At present, 33 out of Florida’s 67 counties impose an additional 12 cents per gallon. Seminole County is considering joining this list by increasing its current 7-cent gas tax by another 5 cents.

Gas is an expense that drivers have either learned to live with or tried to work around.

“This time it was $35, but it usually costs $35 to $40 just for half a tank. Normally, a full tank would be $80 or $90,” mentioned Nathan Hoover.

“I travel a long way to my job, back and forth. So that’s why I got a car that has really good gas mileage,” a woman named Susan told News 6.

When asked about the potential 5-cent increase, many drivers said gas is already expensive enough.

“I feel that taxes are already too high. Gas is vital for everyone’s daily transit. Paying more for it will further impact everyone’s budget and may lead to more economic problems,” expressed Brad Green.

“I wish they wouldn’t do it because it hurts everybody, but it is what it is,” Susan said.

Even if Seminole County raises its gas tax to 12 cents, nearby Orange County maintains a 6-cent charge. Some motorists may opt to fill up in Orange County to save money, though Hoover indicated he would likely remain in town and accept the hike.

“This station is conveniently close to my apartment, making it ideal for stops on my way to work for refueling. It’s difficult to go out of my way given the fuel efficiency of my truck,” he explained.

The additional revenue from the tax increase is planned to fund transportation projects, including capital improvements like mass transit facilities.

“It’s not entirely bad. There are undoubtedly roads that could benefit from repairs. However, we’re already taxed in numerous areas. The question is, are these funds truly being allocated properly?” Green questioned.

The Seminole County board will vote on the gas tax increase on Tuesday. If approved, the new rate will take effect Jan. 1, 2026.
