MASURY, Ohio (WKBN) – A mother in Ohio who lost her daughter to a sudden illness is finding comfort in knowing her daughter’s final gift a heart donation has saved a woman’s life.

One year ago, Kaitlan Adams went into sudden cardiac arrest at just 22 years old. Doctors found internal bleeding from an undetected ectopic pregnancy. Kaitlan died days later, but her story didn’t end there.

“My legs just turned to Jell-O,” Sandra Hutchinson, Adams’ mother, said. “I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ For a moment, it felt like a nightmare, like it wasn’t really happening.”

But Kaitlan’s organs are now saving three lives. Her kidney and liver each went to two different recipients, and her heart now beats inside Nasasha Parker.

“I feel like her living on gives me comfort in my heart that she’s helping someone else,” Hutchinson said.

For Parker, Kaitlan’s heart meant the end of a long and painful fight. Diagnosed with AL amyloidosis and multiple melanomas, Parker spent years in and out of hospitals, waiting and hoping for a new heart.

“I was in the hospital 94, 95 days before I actually received the good news,” Parker said.

With a stethoscope in hand, Parker let Hutchinson and Kaitlan’s husband, Cade Adams, hear the heartbeat they thought they’d never hear again.

“I feel 100% better, and I feel grateful,” Parker said, adding that she initially harbored “a sense of guilt” for continuing to live, while someone else passed away.

“Now that I’ve met Miss Sandy, I don’t feel guilty anymore,” she said.

For Hutchinson and Cade Adams, Kaitlan lives on not just in memory, but in motion.

“I loved hearing that. I wish I could record it,” Hutchinson said.

It’s a bond born from the unthinkable that now brings healing to both sides and serves as a reminder that love never stops beating, but rather finds a new rhythm.

“It still doesn’t seem real, almost. It’s her heart that’s in there, and I got to hear it,” Cade Adams said. “It’s a lot, but it’s a lot in a good way.”
