Augusta residents continue to seek rental assistance

HEPHZIBAH, Ga () – The city of Augusta hoping to help those of you who say you need help paying rent.

Hundreds at the Robert Howard Community Center hope their applications get approved to help with rent, utilities and other housing related needs.

Due to the large number of applicants, the city has had to limit the intake locations and is no longer taking walk-ins at the main office or online.

One person I spoke with waited in line for almost 4 hours but says she appreciates what the city is doing.

“It’s beneficial that they’re assisting people with their bills and rent. With kids returning to school, it’s crucial because they need the TV and lights on, and they need food in the refrigerator,” remarked Lina Wright.

Another person I spoke with had also been waiting in line for hours but she was not as satisified with the program.

“We all require assistance, and the requirements seem to change constantly. One moment they ask for social security cards, then your lease, then several check stubs, and they appear unwilling to aid those who just need help with their light bill,” commented Venicia Campfield.

Alex Smith is new to Augusta and just retired from the military. He told me it’s wonderful to see the city helping people with their necessities.

“It’s fantastic that these programs exist because many people truly need assistance. With the economy being so unpredictable, it’s a great thing, and it’s been incredibly helpful for me as I recently retired. I’ll gladly accept any help and support,” expressed Smith.

The last intake opportunity is:

Wednesday, August 20th at May Park, 622 4th Street Augusta, GA 30901 from 12 p.m. – 7 p.m.
