SAVANNAH, Ga. () — National Farmers Market Day drew a crowd of hundreds of people to Forsyth Park on Saturday.

“The freshness is quite unmatched. You can clearly see where the products come from, and everything is sourced very locally, so it’s definitely worth it—especially when planning a special meal,” remarked shopper Wesley Jameson.

Shop owner Ryan O’Reilly told News 3 that, ironically, the special day falls during one of the worst times for South Georgia produce.

“During the height of summer, you’re mostly left with eggplants and peppers,” explained O’Reilly. “The tomato season has ended, and it’s a bit early for fall produce, so there’s not much variety this time of year down south when it’s this hot.”

Vendors mentioned that they have their best sales at the Forsyth Market. Christian Schmoe of Schmoe Farms noted that they experience increased business when grocery staple prices rise.

“People think if they’re going to spend that much on eggs at a store, they might as well come to the farmer for better quality, so we’ve definitely noticed that trend,” said Schmoe.

He also mentioned that many customers want to be aware of what they’re consuming and know the source of their food. For this reason, they’re ready to pay a bit more.

“Our prices are based on our feed and labor, not on some arbitrary cost a corporation decides. Our pricing feels much more personal compared to what’s available in grocery stores.”

The market is open year-round. Vendors say the autumn harvest is just weeks away.
