NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Federal Bureau of Investigation updated its national crime database on Tuesday, showcasing the latest five-year trend in crime statistics for Tennessee.

The FBI compiles annual data from law enforcement agencies nationwide through the Incident-Based Reporting System. The most recent data, covering crime up to December 2024, indicates declines in all violent crime categories in Tennessee over the past five years — including homicide, rape, aggravated assaults, and robberies.

Robberies experienced the most significant drop, with approximately 38.5% fewer incidents reported in December 2024 compared to December 2019. Homicides followed with a reduction of just over 30% in the same period. Reported rapes decreased by roughly 18%, while the smallest reduction was seen in aggravated assaults, which decreased by about 1%.

Tennessee’s decrease in violent crime mirrors a national trend, as the FBI reports a 4.5% drop in crime nationwide when comparing 2024 with the previous year’s estimates.

The FBI’s report also addressed property crimes — including arson, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft. Except for one category, Tennessee observed declines across the board. The number of burglaries decreased by about 42%, while larceny-theft saw a roughly 25% reduction. Additionally, arsons were down by approximately 7.5%.

However, when it came to motor vehicle thefts, Tennessee saw about a 3.9% increase.
