ST. JOHN, Ind. (WLS) — A Northwest Indiana community is mourning the sudden loss of one of its own.

St. John Police Detective Aaron Amptmeyer died after a medical emergency while playing hockey in a men’s league Friday night, officials said.

Loved ones are remembering Amptmeyer as a devoted father, a decorated officer and a hero.

“He’s just bigger than life,” said Carole Vrshek, Amptmeyer’s aunt and Godmother. “Really big, funny guy.”

Outside the St. John Police Department, a growing tribute is being assembled for Detective Amptmeyer. His police vehicle is encircled by flowers, heartfelt messages, hockey sticks, and jerseys, all serving as tokens of remembrance for the man who dedicated his life to several communities in Northwest Indiana.

His aunt and uncle Carole and Terry Vrshek were among those showing up to feel the support for their nephew on Sunday.

“He’s a great athlete, good hockey player, very passionate and very dedicated to whatever he was doing,” said Terry Vrshek.

Amptmeyer began his journey in law enforcement in Gary back in 2005. He later worked in Dyer before joining the St. John Police in 2018 and was the leader of the Northwest Regional SWAT Team.

From his early days as a rookie officer, he was known for his life-saving acts. Vanessa Breese recalls how Amptmeyer was the first on scene when her husband, a fellow officer in Gary, suffered a heart attack.

“Amptmeyer found him, pulled the door open, lifted him by the belt and collar, placed him in his car, and rushed him to the emergency room. He stayed in the hospital for a week and eventually had to retire, but Amptmeyer’s quick actions saved his life,” Breese shared.

Friends, loved ones, and colleagues are honoring the man behind the badge—the lives he impacted and his legacy, which includes a young daughter he cherished.

“She was the apple of his eye,” Terry Vrshek said. “That’s what he lived for. He lived for her.”

“He adored his daughter,” noted Carole Vrshek. “Whenever he could spend time with her, he took the opportunity. She admired him greatly and often followed him around.”

Family members told ABC7 services for Officer Amptmeyer are planned for next week.
