PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — 12 Toy Australian Shepherds are up for adoption in Central Oregon after being rescued from poor living conditions, authorities said.

According to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Bend Fire & Rescue responded to a reported structure fire on Tumalo Reservoir Road, and when firefighters arrived, they saw multiple dogs that were living in “filthy conditions.”

Deputies responded to the scene and said they found extensive accumulations of animal waste inside the home and in the basement.

Officials said they spoke with the owner, David De Persio, 38.

The 12 dogs were surrendered voluntarily, and they were taken to the Humane Society of Central Oregon, officials said.

De Persio was cited for second-degree animal neglect, and officials said the charge has been elevated to a Class C Felony since there were over 11 animals at the home.

The dogs are now up for adoption at the Humane Society of Central Oregon, and authorities said they are considered to be generally healthy, but they are under socialized. The dogs will require extra attention, training and patience.
