Mystery of home invader who butchered country star's mom deepens

Kevin Moses Walker seemed like an ordinary camper when he checked into a packed Virginia campsite one August afternoon.

He chatted politely with staff and even joined guests on a guided tour of a set of caves called the Endless Caverns.

Less than 48 hours later, he fatally stabbed the mother of a rising country music star in her own home before being shot dead by her husband.

The case has perplexed investigators, and new details of Walker’s final days revealed by the Daily Mail have deepened the mystery.

Holly Hatcher, 62, whose son is musician Spencer Hatcher, was murdered by Walker, 41, inside her home north of Harrisonburg on August 3.

Walker, from Pikesville, Maryland, broke into the residence just after midnight. He was fatally shot by Hatcher’s husband, 65-year-old Michael, after a confrontation in the driveway, as stated by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities are still investigating but have confirmed that Walker had no known history of criminal or violent behavior and described the incident involving Hatcher as ‘highly unusual’ and ‘completely random’.

Little else is known about Walker. On August 1, he had spent the night at the Endless Caverns Resort in New Market, Virginia.

The general manager of the campsite, Mike Stewart, informed the Daily Mail that Walker was ‘polite’ when he checked in, and neither he nor any other staff members noted any odd behavior from Walker.

Rising country music star Spencer Hatcher (pictured) has canceled several upcoming performances after his mother was killed during a violent home invasion in Rockingham County, Virginia.

‘We all interacted with him, and there was nothing aggressive or unusual about him.

‘There were no warning signs that would have suggested he’d be capable of such an act… if there were, I would’ve contacted the authorities,’ expressed Stewart.

‘Everything was normal until it wasn’t… the next morning, that’s when everything went south.’

The resort was packed with families with children when Walker checked in on August 1, Stewart said.

Walker went on the cavern tour with a large group of guests at 3pm and then told camp staff he was looking for a place to spend the night.

He paid for an RV site for one night and was escorted to the plot by Stewart.

‘He was polite and he didn’t do anything to raise our alarms,’ reiterated Stewart. ‘We see a lot of people, and he just seemed like a regular guy who was just passing through and needed somewhere to stay.’

Three hours after the cavern tour, Walker drove to a nearby Walmart where he purchased a large knife and a sleeping bag, according to police.

Then, sometime between 3am and 5am, Walker rammed his car into the front door of the resort’s gift shop.

Stewart said Walker entered the store but did not steal anything.

He also ‘fooled around’ in the caverns but didn’t cause any additional damage.

His car was later found abandoned a short distance away at the side of a road.

Stewart said Walker was quickly identified as the culprit behind the gift shop vandalism because his front bumper was left at the scene and matched his abandoned vehicle.

Stewart shared photographs of the damage with the Daily Mail, showing the resort’s gift shop door smashed in and shards of glass scattered across the ground.

He estimated the cost of the damage to be over $10,000.

Patrol vehicles and a drone were deployed to search for Walker, but no trace of him was found.

Stewart said he is stumped as to why Walker broke into the gift shop and what may have set him off.

‘We don’t know, it all seemed totally out of the blue. I would hate to even hesitate a guess,’ said Stewart.

‘But we’re all a little bit shaken up to have been so close to someone capable of doing something as awful as he eventually did.’

Walker’s movements for the next few hours remain unclear.

During that time, felony warrants were issued for his arrest, but Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson said during a press conference that law enforcement had no reason to suspect the ‘potential for any violence’ during the initial investigation.

The next call authorities received was at 11:58pm on Sunday, August 3, when Michael Hatcher reported the home invasion.

First responders found Michael Hatcher outside his home with visible injuries, while Walker was lying dead in the driveway.

Holly Hatcher was discovered inside the house with fatal stab wounds.

‘It was determined that the offender entered the home armed with a large knife and stabbed the victim, causing her fatal injuries,’ a release from the sheriff’s office reads.

Walker then proceeded to attack Michael Hatcher with the knife, and an altercation spilled out into the driveway.

There, Michael Hatcher was able to grab a handgun from his car and shoot and kill Walker.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Michael Hatcher stated that many of the questions surrounding the case may never be answered.

‘All I can tell you is we’ve cried, we’ve hurt, and we’ve hugged, and we have found more love than we have ever known has existed between us, and between you,’ he added.

Spencer Hatcher appeared at the press conference beside his father.

The musician emphasized that his family would only stick to the facts, considering the speculation about what unfolded.

He also posted a statement on social media, announcing the cancellation of several upcoming shows, citing a ‘monumental loss’ in his family.

Law enforcement is continuing to investigate Walker’s motive.

The Daily Mail contacted a phone number registered to his parents’ home for more than two decades.

A man answered the phone but declined to identify himself or discuss Walker’s death, issuing a blanket ‘no’ to half a dozen questions.

Holly Hatcher worked as a teacher in rural Virginia for 19 years.

Her employer, Rockingham County Public Schools, said she was a dedicated educator who displayed an ‘unwavering commitment’ to her students in a statement on Facebook.

‘She poured her heart into her work, positively impacting countless students and colleagues,’ the statement read.

Sheriff Hutcheson said he had known the Hatchers for years and that Holly Hatcher was his oldest son’s teacher.

‘I’ve been in law enforcement for 31 years and I have never seen anything like this in my entire career,’ Hutcheson said.

Stewart told the Daily Mail he is relieved none of his guests or staff were hurt by Walker, though he is heartbroken for Hatcher’s loved ones.

‘We’re relieved but saddened because we are a small community,’ he said. ‘We might have dodged a bullet, but somebody else didn’t – a local teacher who is well known in the area.

‘We’re thankful to be okay, but we are heartbroken.’
