A man from New York state has been formally charged for allegedly stalking and harassing the family of murdered healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, officials announced on Wednesday.

Shane Daley, aged 40, was apprehended and faces accusations of “leaving harassing and threatening voicemails for a relative of the slain UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson,” according to a statement released by federal prosecutors in Albany.

The intimidating phone calls were made from December 4 to December 7 last year, shortly after Thompson was shot and killed in New York City’s Midtown area.

Prosecutors revealed that “in a series of voicemail messages, Daley used threatening and harassing language referencing, among other things, Thompson’s death. He expressed satisfaction over the incident and insinuated that the victim’s family and Thompson’s children deserved a similar fate,” prosecutors detailed.

Thompson’s slaying sparked waves of callous praise for his killer, immediately after shooting.

Daley is from Galway, New York, which is about 35 miles northwest of the state capital of Albany.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Daley had hired or been assigned an attorney to speak on his behalf.

Christopher Raia, who is the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s New York office, remarked that the suspect’s calls were “not just callous and cold-hearted. They posed a threat and instilled fear in a family already grieving the violent loss of their loved one,” he stated.
