A notorious child abuser central to debates about South Australia’s legal shortcomings is back in jail, but dissatisfaction remains due to a sentencing decision that will allow his release in just over a year.
The ACT Supreme Court sentenced the criminal to two years for assaulting 12-year-old Mike Worsman, with a provision for release after 16 months if an 18-month good behaviour bond is adhered to.
“That’s not justice,” Worsman said.
“The hurt inflicted upon me and my family over the last six years surpasses any solace gained from his mere 16-month incarceration.”
Worsman had been actively trying to prevent the offender’s release after he completed a separate five-year jail term in South Australia for molesting another child.
Instead, the predator was able to fly solo to Canberra for a court date a day later.
He then walked free on bail awaiting today’s sentencing, but in that time he was charged with harassment over a text message he sent Worsman.
“What I’ve experienced over the last two weeks has been an absolute disregard as a victim, bordering on contempt,” Worsman said.
Despite his disappointment with today’s judicial outcome, Worsman remains committed to supporting other victims, aiming to speak for those currently too scared to tell their stories.
“For me it’s all about reform,” he said.
“It’s crucial to amplify victims’ voices, ensure guaranteed sentences for safety, and question the value of a child’s purity,” he expressed.
