Gloria Gaynor’s Political Ties: What She’s Said (and Hasn’t Said)

There are no public documents confirming Gaynor as a supporter of Trump or a Republican. Contrary to fellow awardee Sylvester Stallone, who dubbed Trump the “second George Washington”, Gaynor has refrained from making explicit political endorsements. Nonetheless, her previous remarks on faith and LGBTQ+ issues have sparked criticism.

“I want to lead [fans] to Christ and what he has for them. I want to lead them to truth.” —Gloria Gaynor, 2007 interview with Radio 4.

In 2016, she lamented the “lack of dignity” in politics without directly naming Trump and lauded Barack Obama for maintaining presidential decorum. Accepting Trump’s honor stands in stark contrast to her fanbase: 92% of Black women voters opposed Trump in 2024.

The Kennedy Center Controversy: Why Her Honor Feels Political

Donald Trump personally selected Gaynor, claiming he was “98% involved” in the choices and dismissed “wokesters”. His revamp of the typically bipartisan awards has been met with criticism:

“Under Trump, the ceremony is now a curated display of loyalty.” —BlackPressUSA.

Gaynor’s anthem, linked to LGBTQ+ strength, contrasts sharply with Trump’s policies against transgender rights. Yet, Trump called the song “unbelievable” during the announcement.
