South Australia will become the first state to ban soy sauce fish containers in a matter of weeks.

The containers, along with plastic straws and cutlery that accompany food or drinks, non-compostable fruit and vegetable stickers, and prepackaged cups and bowls with meals, will begin their phase-out starting September 1.

These items will be added to the extensive list of banned single-use plastics, which includes grocery bags, straws, cutlery, stirrers, cups, bowls, plates, containers, cotton buds, pizza savers, confetti, balloon sticks and ties, and food bag tags.

Australia is among over 175 nations working towards the completion of a legally-binding global plastics treaty in Geneva, as worldwide plastic production and consumption is predicted to triple by 2060.

“We are committed to advocating for an effective and impactful global treaty to reach our objective of eliminating plastic pollution by 2040,” stated Federal Environment Minister Murray Watt.

“These negotiations are an essential move towards safeguarding the world’s oceans and environment for future generations, and we steadfastly promote global collaboration.”
