Footage of a much-loved Sydney security guard’s final moments has been shown in the NSW District Court.

The vision shows 30-year-old Mousa Al-Zaher attempting to move on drunk patron Brian Brown outside of the Royal Hotel in Sutherland – but within 10 minutes, Al-Zaher was dead.

Brown, 33, was sentenced to three-and-a-half years today for manslaughter over the fight in February 2024.

Brown had been kicked out of the venue at 2am and approached Al-Zaher on the footpath outside.

Others tried to intervene but Al-Zaher took three punches to the head.

The security guard fought back but then he crumpled and could not be saved.

The 30-year-old was a student from Saudi Arabia who had an underlying heart condition.

Defence barrister Slade Howell argued “neither man was really making an effort to de-escalate”.

But Judge Nicole Norman SC said Al-Zaher was “present in his capacity as security”, described the incident as a “senseless act of violence” which caused “unimaginable harm and misery”.

The court heard Brown has no memory of the attack.

The father described his own actions as disgraceful, never applied for bail and has spent the past 18 months behind bars.

He will be eligible for release in February.
