Florida Teacher Charged With DUI After Crashing Into School Fence

A teacher from Florida faced arrest on a driving under the influence charge this week after he collided with a school fence on the school year’s opening day.

A deputy from the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office discovered Philip Scire, 32, unconscious around 11 a.m. on Tuesday. He was found behind the wheel, and the car remained in gear, according to the sheriff’s office. The deputy also observed “several empty single-serving alcohol containers within reach” inside the vehicle.

Scire was taken for an evaluation at a hospital, where another deputy arrived to speak with him. That deputy noted that “Scire smelled of alcohol.”

Scire declined multiple efforts by the deputy to obtain consent for a blood draw to assess blood alcohol levels or check for other substances.

Once released from the hospital, Scire was charged with driving under the influence.

Scire is a language arts teacher for grades 6 through 8 at Explorer K-8 school located in Spring Hill, approximately 50 miles north of Tampa, as reported by the Miami Herald. The Hernando County School District stated that Scire was “placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.”

He was released from jail after posting a $1,000 bond.
